A sold out dinner show with 200+ seated and over 100 standing had a great nights entertainment with some cracking bouts. Many thanks to ALL the clubs that made the journey to make the show possible.
A HUGE thanks to the officials that made it possible also, in no particular order, John Ryder, Jumbo Basi, Chas Coakley, Ted Moughton, Ian Carter, John O'mahoney, Alfie Bowen, Annie Petrea, Mick Lawlor, Dr Sharista, Paul "the guvnor" Claydon and the extremely young and impressive young referree Junior Potts who if the youth of today were all like him the world would be a better place.
Finally a special thank you to Dan O'Sullivan who makes a difficult job look so damn easy, keeps it all running smoothly with an effortless calmness. Also hats off to Tony Kennelly who runs his backside off making the whole thing come together.

A final big thank you to all our corporate sponsors who support us throughout the year with financial backing, it is much appreaciated.

Many thanks to all the clubs that attended that help make it a great night. Some great bouts with my favourite by far the Taylor v Taylor bout that could have gone either way, confirmed by the confusion when the result was announced Laughing
Lovely to see so many Councillors and Mayors in attendance and once we tally things up the various charities should benefit handsomely.

Also a word of thanks to ALL the officials that made the night possible, super Dan O'Sullivan who makes running the night so much easier, Paul Claydon (let's hope the Hammers can get 3pts today) Jumbo Basi for reffing all 10 bouts with extreme efficiency, Ian Carter, John Burling, Gerry Channing, John o'Mahoney, Annie Petrea and anyone else I have forgotten.

That's about it, also a final word of thanks to the crowd that paid on the night to watch and behaved impeccably and helped make the atmosphere.

Simon O'Driscoll Wins JABA Title

Five Star Boxer Simon capped a wonderful year both personally and for the club winning his first JABA title in the Class 4 U75kg category at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday 23rd May. In a rematch of their CYP final Simon was always in command and picked some quality scoring shots to run out the 24-5 winner.

Another National Schoolboy Champion!.

I'm sure you will all be glad to hear that Five Star ABC have another National Schoolboy Champion!.
Billy Beer was crowned Class 2 (for lads born in the year 1996)  at Under 44kg on Sunday evening after a classic bout with Doncaster's Nathan McGarry. Billy was 3-1 down on points going into the final round but after some solid advice from his corner came out in the last and was eventually declared a 6-4 winner.

Once again it's all down to the help and financial support we receive from our Sponsors that keep us going, so for those that do, please give yourself a large pat on the back, you've made one little lad's dream come true. A few photo's are attached, one of him in action, one hearing the result (look's pleased doesn't he!!) and one receiving his award from Keith Waters, Chairman of the English Amateur Boxing Association.

He will now go on and represent England in the 3 nations competition later this month against the national champs from Wales and Scotland, this is being held in Scotland so it's more days off unpaid from work for the trainers.

PUTTING ON A CLUB SHOW

As you can imagine it's not easy putting on a club show, there are many people needed pulling together to make it work. It's not just the boxers and the trainers; there are the club officials who help set up the hall. Also there are judges, normally at least three of them, sometimes up to five. A time keeper is needed, plus someone to record the results. Also needed are referee/s in the ring, a master of ceremonies to host the event and on top of this is an OIC (Officer in charge) who keeps everything running smoothly. With the weigh-in for most events beginning at least 3 hours before boxing commences and most shows hosting between 12-20 bouts, shows last most of the day. So how much do these people get paid? How much would you want to spend all day making sure young lads and lasses were able to participate in the sport? You may have to take a day off work? You may be self-employed and have forsaken a day's salary to make sure these kids get to box? ANSWER: EVERY single one of the people mentioned above do this for NOTHING, not a penny, sometimes not even a thank you. Please remember that.

All Amateur boxing clubs in England are governed by the ABAE (Amateur Boxing Association of England)  and a full copy of their rules and regulations can be found on the internet using the link below.

Five Star Club Show - 27th February

A cracking show was held at the gym and it was great to see so many knowledgable boxing fans in attendance. Five Star had 13 boxers on, with 10 winning, the results are all detailed on the results page, so another great result for the team. Particulary impressive was Tyler McCarthy who won best Junior bout, Jack Murray (best Senior), Steff Chester on a great comeback victory, Joe Kelleher and Brandon Herbert. Little Daniel Lee also showed a lot of guts and determination. Lee Markham had a nice warm up win for the ABA's which start this friday for him, a very tough draw at 75kg. Photo's from the show and the videos will be available to club members shortly.

Five Star Schoolboys Finals - 7th March

Five Star have boxer Billy Beer representing them in the National Schoolboy finals to be held at the Brentwood Centre on the 7th March 2010. Billy will be up against Nathan McGarry from Doncaster Plant ABC. Boxing is set to commence at 2pm and it should be a cracking weekends boxing

CYP's Semi-Finals - 14th March

Five Star are represented by two lads in the National Semi-finals of the CYP's to be held at The Edge Leisure Centre, Woolmer Hill Road, Haslemere, GU27 1QB on the 14th March. In the class A 70-75kg category Five Star's Simon O'Driscoll is up against Michael Hughes from the Wells ABC club from Somerset and in the Class B 66-70kg Jack Murray faces Splott ABC boxer Michael Bull.

McCarthy wins - AT the Double.

Five Star ABC continued their impressive form in the National boxing Championships last weekend with all their boxers going through to the next rounds of their respective competitions.

First up on Friday night was Eastern Region of England finals of the National Association of Clubs for Young People (NACYP's) for boys hosted by Billericay Boxing club at Hannakins Farm Sports Complex, Billericay. Five Star boxer Tyler McCarthy, entered in the Class B (under 57kg) category found himself in a group of 3 other boxers so would need to fight twice in the space of a few hours to go through to the next round. First up in the semi-finals Tyler was up against experienced Harwich ABC boxer Joey Avenell who was having his 38th fight. Both boxers began strongly and in an even first round the scores were very tight. Early in the second both boxers heads clashed with Tyler receiving a nose bleed that his corner were lucky to be able to stop deteriating. Into the third with scores looking very close Tyler connected with some very well timed shots and came through the majority winner on the judges scorecards. Next up in the final, just a few hours later Tyler found himself up against Chatteris ABC boxer Richard Calaunan who had also had a semi final bout earlier. Once again both boxers started well but it was possibly southpaw Calaunan who looked to have saved the most energy and it was he who scored with a few decent shots that went ahead in the bout. In the second both boxers were giving it their all with Tyler starting to find his range with some very strong right hands that connected. Into the third round it was still very open but Tyler dug deep and with the instructions of his corner to keep pressure on his opponent was able to corner a very tricky Calaunan and score with some sustained pressure with both lefts and rights connecting. By the end of a greatly entertaining bout both boxers were understandably exhausted but Tyler was justifiably declared the winner by a unanimous margin by all the judges. Trainer Barry Horton said, "it's testimony to all the boxers that have had to fight twice in one night how dedicated they are to the sport. Tyler fought superbly against some tough opposition and really had to suck it up in his second bout and it will do his confidence the world of good now going into the next round of the competition"

Also on the bill was Simon O'Driscoll representing Five Star for the first time in the Under 75kg Class A division against Ernest Oakley from Eastgate boxing club. Simon who has been out of the ring for over a year started slowly but livened up in the latter part of the fight and was able to pick some very good scoring shots against a very cagey opponent. Opinions amongst the spectators was split  as to who had received the verdict at the end, but the decision in a tight fight was majority victory for Simon. Simon said after, "I was just glad to get that first fight back out of the way, I wasn't too happy with how I fought but I connected with some good head shots and felt I did enough to get the decision. I'm now looking forward to the next round". Both boxers will be joined by Five Star stablemates Jack Murray, Brad Jefferson and Harry Brown-Sykes who all had walk overs in the next round of the competition to be held this Saturday at the Harold Hill Community Centre, Gooshays Drive, Harold Hill.

Next up in the Schoolboys was Billy Beer who received a walkover when his planned opponent Donny Britton just failed to make the weight limit. Barry Horton, Five Star head trainer said, "It's a shame for the other lad as he's a cracking boy and it would have been a really good contest, but now Billy's in the last 4 and has a really good opportunity now to go on and win". Billy will now represent London and the Eastern Counties of England against Southern and Western Counties winner Tommy Mobey of Guildford City Boxing club on the 21st February at the Edge Leisure Centre, Surrey.

London Schoolboys 24th Jan
Our three NE Division Champs represented Five Star at York Hall. Unfortunately Billy Gowing had to withdraw due to a stomach injury leaving just two. First up was Billy Beer who was fighting in the U44kg Class 2 semi final. Billy boxed well and finished the fight strong winning by a some what dubious majority decision when most expected a unanamous. Billy is next up in the Final agaisnt Stowe ABC boxer J Ward on the 30th Jan at the Five Star Gym. Last up was Joe Kelleher against Body shots boxer Joe Smith a previousl winner of the Schoolboys competion last year and also a tri nations silver medalist. None of this seemed to faze Joe who in a very technical bout appeared to have been the victor finishing the bout the strongest and scoring with some very clever shots. Unfortunately the judges gave it to Smith on a 3-2 majority which surprised a lot of experienced boxing efficiandos around the ring. Joe can be very proud to have represented Five Star with a great display of pugilistic skills.

Five Star ABC held their first ever Open Air Boxing Demonstration at the Raphael Park Open Day on Sunday 12th June.
All the Five Star team were in attendance and the show was opened by the Mayor of Havering. The Wonderful Dan Sullivan was there to MC the event and talked non stop for 5 hours (try it it's very hard). Stuart and John from Tottenham and Enfield supplied the ring with the marquee coming from CQ Marquees. Five Star would like to thank all the committee for making it work, especially Kevin for leading the project. It was a great advert for the club and has drawn in new membership enquiries already. Also there lending support was Paul "the guvnor" from Romford ABC and professional boxers Kevin Mitchell and Nicky Cook. Another big thanks goes to the Debden team who brought a few good lads along to assist in the sparring. The impressive crowd were shown the full range of the boxers training routine from warming up, skipping, exercise, through to pad work, sparring and warming down. The Raphael Park Committee have already asked Five Star to appear at next years event to once again promote the wonderful sport of amateur boxing.

Five Star boxer Bobby Curry is celebrating being called up for the England Squad to fight in the 3 Nations championships in Liverpool on the 26th June. Bob who also won at Margate this weekend (30th June) will complete in the u48KG category. Head trainer Barry Horton said, "If there's ever a lad deserving of the opportunity to wear an England vest it's Bobby, he's commitment and work ethic towards training is second to none and he is a credit to himself and amateur boxing. He virtually lives in the gym and supports all the rest of the team when they are fighting, he's a great character and has a lot of ability to back it up"

Five Star show - Prince Regent - May 8th 2009

Five Star's first ever Dinner show at The Prince Regent hotel on May 8th was voted a resounding success by everyone who came and enjoyed the evenings boxing and entertainment. With a sold out capacity of 26 tables with standing room only, the security counted 340 people in through the door. Famous former world champion Charlie Magri was there to hand out prizes and Ronnie O'Sullivan also popped by to cheer on the boxers. Clubs there as well as Five Star came from Barking, Finchley, Hoddesdon, Hanwell, Stevenage, The Peacock gym, Welwyn Garden City and also one boxer (Joe Thompson) came all the way from the Kingston ABC club in Hull (at a days notice). There were 9 Five Star winners and 4 from visiting clubs, which was a pretty fair assesment of the nights boxing. Full results of the night can be found on the results page.

Bout of the night went to Tyler MCCarthey and Joe Thompson, although there was some close competition from some of the other bouts. There were a lot of local businessmen there from the Romford and surrounding area and everyone enjoyed the food, boxing and disco after, although some of the dancing left a little to be desired. Head trainer and matchmaker Barry Horton said "We're very grateful to all the people who came and showed suport for their local club and who I am sure would agree had a great nights entertainment. The standard of boxing was very high with some very close match ups. We have a lot of good boxers coming through the ranks now and we are very hopeful that with the right training and discipline there is every chance we could have a representative from Five Star in the 2012 Olympics."

One of the boxers fathers who helped promote the event Martin Gowing said" On behalf of all the boxers and their parents I would like to thank everyone connected with the Club from the trainers through to the helpers ,who continue to give up all their time for free, they are all a credit to amateur boxing" The club have pencillled in December for their next dinner show.

As well as watching 13 great bouts guests also tucked into a sumptious 4 course meal and enjoyed the raffle and auction with some wonderful prizes up for grabs. Top auction item sold was a George Best signed top which went for £775 and the top prize in the raffle of a weeks free holiday for 6 was won by businessman Dean Pye from Romford based Action Industrial Cleaning who said, "It's a pleasure to support such a great club who have been teaching the local lads the noble art of boxing for over 50years. I've brought some business contacts with me who have never been to a boxing show before and they have all told me how much they've enjoyed themselves and want invites to the next show"

With tables already being snapped up for the next dinner show in December it is expected to be another sell out so anyone wanting a table should reserve one now by emailing martin@fivestarboxing.co.uk

CYP Results - ANOTHER FIVE STAR CHAMP
The ultra impressive Jake Beer celebrated victory in the Class B U52kg division in a tough contest with Burmantofts Ikhtsham Lone coming out the deserved 7-4 winner. Jake lived up to his nickname " No Fear" picking off a strong opponent with some very clever hard hitting shots.

08.03.2009
Schoolboy Finals
Last years winner and three nations champ Jake Weedon narrowly failed to retain his 2008 title losing in the final to much improved Issac Mcleod from Sunderland. In a cagey contest Isaac proved the stronger fighter and was the deserved winner.

25.01.2009
Four lads represented Five Star in the London Schoolboy finals held at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham. On a long day for all concerned there were 40 bouts in one ring, with the first bout at 1pm and the last one at 8.55pm! First up was young Billy Beer who had a very close bout with H Connelly eventually just losing 5-4, many onlookers believing Beer had done enough to deserve the verdict. Another Billy, this time Gowing had another walkover and progresses into the next round as London Champion without having had to throw a punch. Not so lucky was Brad Jefferson who found himself one of three lads in the Class 3 U60kg cat. His semi final bout against N Smith from Epsom had some experienced judges and onlookers scratching their heads. Brad was in control from the opening bell and never looked in trouble against a boy slightly less experienced. When the verdict came at the end of the bout that it was a majority and not a unanimous decision there were gasps all around the hall. The two judges who had scored in favour had Brad by 36-0 and 24-4, maybe wisely the judge who gave it to the other lad didn't want to show his scorecard. Fortunately by the time the Final came around the judges were all singing off the same hymn sheet and Brad beat S Parks by a unanimous decision, although this was a lot closer than the semi with a lot less scoring shots. Jake Weedon commenced his defence of what  last year was the Golden Gloves with a tidy victory against Tom Fant, after a very cagey opening couple of rounds coming through in the last round to score with a couple of decisive shots that possibly was the difference. So three boys make it through to the next round which is London v The Home Counties, this is to be held this Saturday in Oxford.

23.01.2009
Four of our boys will be representing Five Star in the London ABA Schools Finals at Goresbrook Leisure Centre this Sunday 25th Jan, bouts commence at 1pm and we wish Billy Beer, Brad Jefferson, Billy Gowing and last years Golden Gloves winner Jake Weedon all the best.

25.01.2009
Five Star has 3 boxers in action on the Romford ABC show on Friday 30th January. George Majer, Lee Markham and Billy Gowing. Doors open at 6pm and first bout commences 7.30pm

01.2009
On a recent trip to Spain, Five Star lads Lee Markham and Jake Beer met up with the Irish National team preparing for their senior ABA 's with an organised sparring and training session with their Spanish counterparts and were invited to join in. Lee found himself up against the Irish Number one and impressed onlookers with his technique and style whilst young junior Jake was pitched against full senior open class opposition and held his own, with season pro's quoting he was more than a match for the Irish guys.

12.2008
Five Star Amatuer Boxing club (Est 1954) have their first club show of the year on 5th December 2008 at their club in Gooshays Drive, Harold Hill. There will be approx 20 bouts and the turnout of supporters is allways very high (750-1000 people). There is a good appetite of rivalry between the clubs and their boxers and there will be some great bouts as well as some boxing stars of the future.

THANKS in no small part to support from hire & reward specialists Motorcade City Ltd and a number of their closest business associates, Essex based amateur boxing club 5-Star not only recently staged a sell-out show featuring some of the UK's finest amateur boxing talent, but also found vital sponsorship that will hopefully see them through the undoubtedly tough financial times ahead.
Opened in 1954, thanks to donations from local residents, who each chipped in and paid for a brick, Harold Hill based 5-Star ABC has grown into one of the country's leading amateur boxing clubs, last year producing its first Golden Gloves champion and 2012 Olympic hopeful Jake Weedon. No mean achievement considering the club is solely reliant on the input of five trainers who, between them, voluntarily give up over 80 hours of their time each week to teach local youngsters  the noble art.
You'd assume with such sterling charitable work being put into the centre the local authority would be falling over themselves to aid such a worthy cause. After all, with a membership in excess of 100 teenagers and over 100 more waiting to join, keeping so many young adults off the street, out of mischief and entertained should be something actively encouraged and supported by government. But apparently not!
Instead Havering Council recently had the club reeling with a series of body blows, including a plan to increase their ground rent from £50 to £13,500 per annum whilst at the same time ducking pleas for assisting with the cost of replacing the gym's leaking 50 year old roof. Hardly in the spirit of fairplay evoked in the Marquess of Queensbury rules!
Now you might think being under such an intense barrage would cause even the most hardened of fighters to throw in the towel, but not 5-Star. With a comeback to rival a scene from a Rocky film, the club has slipped the punches and fought it's way out of a tight
financial corner, countering the council to such an extent that the rent demands have been dropped to £5,000.
However, despite winning (or at least getting a draw) from that encounter, the club is still very much up against it.  As well as finding the money to cover the new rent rate, 5-Star also require funding for a new minibus to replace their 13 year old journeyman that has seen far too many rounds and needs to hang up its gloves. Add to this a wide open defence against plunging winter temperatures due to a lack of central heating (and that leaking roof) and you can see why the club is on the back foot. Fortunately for 5-Star this is where Motorcade have stepped in.
With the guile of a seasoned pro, Motorcade director Martin Gowing has been verbally sparring with over 25 businesses, and has so far walked away with a positive decision from all but a few of his targets.
Commenting on the plight of 5-Star, Martin said: "I was asked by the club secretary if there was anyway I would get involved in a bit of fund-raising for the club.
"I've lived in the area all my life and seen how big a role this club plays in the community. As well as boxing it is used for a number of other activites, such as dance classes and martial arts, providing local kids and young adults with an accessible recreational venue that instills good values, teaches discipline and keeps them off the streets.
"I'm fortunate to have many charitable business associates who have been only too willing to help out financially, to all of which I, and the club are extremely greatful. The bad news for them is that I'll be on their case again next year."
Despite not having yet hit their target, 5-Star are well and truly on the way and if a potentially generous deal from Ford comes to fruition the club may finally be able to put that rusty old minibus into a well earned and overdue retirement in the not-too-distant future.
If any PH&C readers are interested in sponsoring 5-Star ABC you can visit

Training is monday, wednesday, friday 6.30 - 7.30pm
